Do I have to?
Do I have to?
I am often asked ‘Do we have to?’
Simply, NO! - apart from the compulsory legal sections which must be included in the ceremony.
Buck tradition if you want! It is your wedding day so stamp your own creativity on to the ceremony; make it truly your own, and totally memorable for all concerned.
Obviously, you will have ideas way and beyond what I will mention here, but all of the following have occurred in at least one wedding at which I officiated.
For brides – consider wearing something other than white. Or if you wish to wear white, consider a special addition. We have seen several brides wearing red shoes Consider a second-hand dress: either your mother’s, a friend’s, or one purchased on e-Bay or similar. Very trendy.
Dress to a theme, or a colour scheme. Carry the colour or theme through in the text of the ceremony, with my help.
Grooms and their attendants have turned up in old-fashioned frock coats, pale grey ‘morning suits’ (that’s not a misprint for ‘mourning suits’) and even smart shorts.
Bridal party attendants can be ‘best girl’ or ‘bride’s man’ depending on your preferences.
Your witnesses might be your grandmothers, rather than your best friends.
For the reception, if in an appropriate setting you might consider providing each group of guests with a picnic basket with all the necessaries in it, and a rug to sit on under a tree to enjoy the day. In honour of the occasion you might even want to plant a tree in the garden if the reception is at home!
Instead of bonbonniere, how about a pot of home made jam or chutney?
And if you want to be really different – or almost different because it’s been done already - take your goldfish – or your horse - to the wedding!
